Stories of this botanical family and the connections to this marvelous tree will provide an in-depth ethnos of this unique West Coast Tree with its mysterious features as to how this walk manifested and why the winery is thus named. For the past 20 years\, we have had a pre-party for Passport that not only allows us to set-up early\, but gives locals and Passport attendees alike a chance to celebrate the great wines and values of the weekend. (We know some locals prefer the calm of tasting not on Passport Weekend when things can get crazy busy!) The Friday night before passport\, we’ll be serving a Parisian Mushroom Soup with the fixins’ while sampling the wines we will showcasing at Passport. And of course\, we’ll be offering the same weekend wine specials on this Friday that the Passport people will be enjoying all weekend long. \nWe are also featuring the 2017 Signature Zinfandel\, bold yet elegant\, aged to perfection. With only 12 cases\, you will be limited on the amount you can get. DESCRIPTION:Winetasting 101–12:30pm \nMadroña History/Winery Tour–2:30pm \nYes\, there’s always something going on at Madroña. And yes\, it’s usually focused around education. Wine is all about learning\, and we have an opportunity to help with this. Thus our Second Sunday Wine Education Classes. \nOn April 14th\, we will be conducting two classes with opportunities to learn something new. Our Winetasting 101 will take you through the “whys” and the “why not’s” of winetasting. Swirling\, tasting\, mapping your palate\, savoring\, etc.\, all with wine in hand to expand the experience. No question is off-limits (at least about wine)\, and it gives people a bit more knowledge when tasting around the state. \nOur second class on April 14th is a Madroña History/Winery Tour. Having started in 1973\, this will give some insight to what we’ve done and why we’ve grown how we have. Do you know why we planted grapes in the first place? Do you know how many acres the Ag Commissioner wanted us to plant? Do you know which of the original vines and varieties still exist? And then there’s nothing better than tasting a wine in the exact vineyard it was grown! \nThe classes are limited to 8 people\, keeping them intimate and educational! DESCRIPTION:2019 Signature Cabernet Sauvignon \nApril 5th-April 12th \n$32/bottle \nThe 2019 vintage of Cabernet Sauvignon has only been available to Madroña Wine Club Members. But with the accolades the wine just received\, we thought we’d open it up to all of you who read the Shrub Report (you know\, hit it while the iron’s hot). \nIt’s a great time to order and ship with the temperatures. (Click here to go Shopping for our Cab!) Or come up to the winery this week and throw together a case of wine…the Cab gets your Wine Club and case discounts too! Here are the details on the wine: \nThe 2019 Signature Cabernet Sauvignon \nThis is one of those Cabernets that will retain its fresh and youthful qualities long into its own life (and I’m not talking tannins here). Beautiful opaque color gives a hint to the depth of this wine for starters. Slight briary notes sprinkled into earthy and cherry characters form the base of the aromas while a subtle black olive extract adds a bit of the Cab Sauv complexity. The palate on the entry is medium-bodied showcasing more of the dark cherry fruit on the onset. Wait a hint\, and the linearity of the essence of this wine commands notice. No peaks\, no valleys\, the 2019 vintage is uniformly balanced throughout. Black fruit\, herbal notes\, a hint of forest floor…it’s all there in this wine. Yet the tannins are refined and approachable\, something not always seen in young mountain Cabs. And then the finish lingers long with black currant\, a pinch of anise\, and just a sprig of rosemary (or is it thyme?). You make the call on that.

DESCRIPTION:Grenache\, Syrah and Mourvedre \nI think the old saying is\, “Give a person a glass of wine\, and they’ll be content for a day….Teach a person how to blend wine and they’ll be happy for life (with lots of new yet educated opinions)!” \nFor this reason\, we are doing our GSM blending event in January–the chance to learn more about what you like in wine! And we’ve opened up a Sunday afternoon class from 1-3pm on the 28th! \nFor those of you who don’t know the term GSM\, this denotes a Grenache/Syrah/Mourvedre blend popularized by Australian winemakers but rooted in the southern Rhone of France. Essentially\, it’s taking three varieties that each have unique aspects that in the aggregate can a make an even better wine. \nFor our class (which is limited to 24 people)\, we will be tasting the 2022 vintage of Grenache\, Syrah and Mourvedre. Then with pipettes\, graduated cylinders and math\, you’ll have the opportunity to start blending\, determining how your palate finds the union of these three wines. \nEntertaining\, educational and exciting!
